FAN Global celebrates independence

On 1 August 2012, Freshwater Action Network becomes an independent consortium.

Over the years, Freshwater Action Network (FAN Global) has been supported by a number of institutions including its host WaterAid which has provided invaluable organizational and financial support to FAN since its establishment in 2000, including hosting the global secretariat in their offices in London.

From August 2012, FAN Global will become independent of WaterAid, as a registered UK charity, governed by an international board of trustees and supported by a smaller secretariat. FAN Global is owned by its members, currently five regional NGO networks – the African Civil Society Network on Water and Sanitation (ANEW), FAN Central America, FAN Mexico, FAN South America and FAN South Asia – who work collaboratively to ensure FAN Global’s success in building the capacity of southern civil society to influence water and sanitation policy.

Danielle Morley, outgoing Executive Secretary and new Trustee says:
“It’s been a pleasure to oversee the huge success of the global network in its journey from a glint in WaterAid’s eye eleven years ago to become the ‘go-to’ local-global network of water and sanitation NGOs active from across Africa, Latin America and South Asia. The transition to independence has been challenging, but also presents a huge opportunity to increase the impact of our influencing work to secure the human right to water and sanitation for all. I’m really proud of how far we’ve come together, the five networks are aligned and strong and I look forward to continuing the work as a voluntary trustee.’ past ten years.”

Barbara Frost, WaterAid’s Chief Executive says:

“WaterAid is pleased to see FAN Global become an independent organisation with its own board of trustees. We have supported the development of this civil society network since its inception in 2000 and will continue to value the partnership with African and Asian regional WASH networks that FAN Global provides.”
