FAN members engage in COP17

FAN members Sena Alouka from Jeunes Volontaires pour l'Environnement in Lomé, Togo, and Rolando Castro from CEDARENA in Costa Rica are raising the importance of water issues in climate change at COP17 in Durban.

Last year, at COP16, FAN Global attended the negotiations as a member of the Water and Climate Coalition (WCC) an alliance of twelve international organizations and research centres
working to raise the water and climate linkages in the context of the climate negotiations.

FAN representatives worked tirelessly at the UNFCCC climate change negotiations in Cancun, Mexico, to lobby governments and saw their hard work pay of when six countries called for water to be put on the climate agenda.

The proposal to include water in the agenda for the next session of the SBSTA was much welcomed by FAN and WCC as a first step.

At this year's COP17, Sena and Rolando will continue to highlight the role of water in climate change mitigation and adaptation and share their knowelge on this. They will also promote FAN's core messages on rights and governance:

  • The need to prioritise human rights within water, sanitation and hygiene
  • The importance of including CSOs in planning processes - learning from what works/what doesn't work at the community level and understanding the needs of the poor
