WSSCC's Global Forum on Sanitation and Hygiene

Global Forum on sanitation

On 9-14 October 2011, ANEW and FANSA members are joining WASH professionals from around the world to gather at WSSCC's Global Forum on Sanitation and Hygiene in Mumbai, India.

FAN/SA and ANEW representatives are promoting the network, their work and learning from the many sessions. They are also making the most of having so many key players from the sector in one place; meeting with key partners to strategize and plan activities at side events.

Please keep an eye on this page as we are posting updates from participating members as they are added.

Analysing the regional sanitation meetings

Ceridwen Johnson, FAN's Network and Commmunications Manager, has been asked to coordinate a regional and global analysis of the regional sanitation meetings – AfricaSan, SACOSAN and LatinoSan - which will be presented and discussed at the forum in the session Sharing across the regional sanitation conferences on Thursday 13 October. ANEW and FANSA will present their regional strategy plans. Ceridwen will also be facilitating the advocacy-based session Practical Experiences in Sanitation and Hygiene.

Dharavi field visit

FAN members will also have the opportunity to go on a field visit to Dharavi, which is known as the 'largest slum in Asia' and faces public health problems due, in part, to the scarcity of toilet facilities, which itself is due partly to the fact that most housing and 90% of the commercial units in Dharavi are illegal. As of November 2006 there was only one toilet per 1,440 residents in Dharavi. Mahim Creek, a local river, is widely used by local residents for urination and defecation, leading to the spread of contagious disease. The area also suffers from problems with inadequate drinking water supply.

Equity and Inclusion: Governance for Equity

On Wednesday some FANSA and ANEW members are speaking in the session Focus on Equity and Inclusion: Governance for Equity.
