Freshwater Action Network - Mexico (FAN-MEX)

WHO ARE FAN-MEX?

A network of civil society organizations based in Mexico.  We promote the exchange of experiences, information, training and dissemination of activities regarding water and sanitation in order to build capacity among our members.

We support the participation of local and national actors in integrated water management and in influencing water and sanitation policies at all levels.

HOW DO WE WORK?

Subdivided in four hydric regions according to each of their characteristics. Each region participates and promotes the development and implementation of sustainable strategies regarding water security and sanitation.

Members promote community water management and are committed to achieving water security in public policy.

To promote equal access to water and sanitation in the region

To promote citizen participation in decision making processes regarding water policies, creating incidence at different levels to achieve sustainability of water resources

Basic principles of FAN-MEX

• Access to safe water and sanitation is, above any other consideration, a fundamental human right. The States must guarantee the access to all without any gender, ethnicity, religion, economic situation or geographical discrimination
• Water is, and must continue to be, a good of the public domain given its vital and strategic natures for all nations in the world. Therefore the water is not, nor can be merchandise.  Nevertheless, it has economic value in all its uses, as it was established by the Conference of Dublin
• Drinking water supply and sanitation must be managed and provided by non profit organizations, communities, local governments or national states
• All management of water resources must be done with active participation of users, communities and their organizations and recognizing the particularities and different needs of men and women, as well as different sectors of society
