FAN-South Asia Consulation Meeting, Nepal 2008
Over 20 representatives, nominated at national & sub-national meetings, came together to plan joint advocacy activities and take steps towards building a strong and vibrant regional network.
The FAN secretariat, ANEW and WaterAid country office staff also contributed to discussions. The meeting covered two major agenda items:
- Setting out the advocacy agenda
Two priority issues were identified to focus on
- Right to water and sanitation services: Putting pressure on national governments to come up with policies to protect rights of citizens for water and sanitation services.
- Climate change:For CSOs and national governments to recognise climate change as real issues, understanding the efforts at community level to adapt and mitigation being adopted at community level. Pressure governments to take action to enable communities to adapt.
2. Next steps and way forward
The basic idea of forming a consortium at South Asia level was agreed with national level networks having representation on a regional coordination committee.
An Interim committee has been formed to take forward plans over next year with support from WaterAid and FAN UK.
More national level meetings will follow to take the process back to grass roots. They aim to have a good structure in place by the end of 2008.
