ANEW Collaborations

ANEW seeks to influence, encourage and assist communities to sustainably manage and utilize water resources

ANEW seeks a region-wide spread of membership and a worldwide spread of partnerships with influential international organizations, international and national non-governmental organizations and government agencies.

African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW)

ANEW is officially recognized by AMCOW as a collaborator and an organization which represents African Civil Society Organizations working on water and sanitation issues.
April 2006, a small ANEW delegation met with the Hon Maria Mutagamba, President of the African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW).  They agreed to work towards formalizing a mutually beneficial relationship.

  • ANEW and AMCOW will develop an agreed Memorandum of Understanding to recognise ANEW as official CSO representative
  • AMCOW agreed to look for funding to recruit somebody to specifically deal with CSO matters.
  • AMCOW president will recommend that ANEW is involved in its Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) Link to minutes

In collaboration with CREPA, ANEW facilitated a two day CSO workshop prior to AMCOW’s 6th session in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo.

The workshop aimed to strengthen the capacities of African CSOs in policy engagement on issues of Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM).

A Memorandum of Understanding between AMCOW and ANEW which  stipulates areas of collaboration and levels of engagement; was approved and ANEW is following up the official signing with the AMCOW president.

African Development Bank

Five ANEW members worked with FAN and WaterAid to conduct research on the African Development Bank Primer.

This was a great opportunity for ANEW members to be involved in reviewing institutions like the AfDB and be able to share with other FAN/ANEW members.

A well acclaimed report has been released and disseminated to different stake holders.

UNDP

November 2006, ANEW members attended a one day consultation on how to disseminate Human Development Report 2006 and identify areas of collaboration with UNDP.

The discussions centered on the role of Civil Society Organizations in disseminating the Human Development Report and using it as an advocacy tool.  It was agreed that Civil Society groups through ANEW have an important role to play in ensuring key findings and recommendations in the report reach African communities.

ANEW was the only CSO from Africa invited to a World Bank, DFID and UNDP high level meeting where ANEW had an opportunity to popularize itself and bring in views from African Civil Society.

African Rivers Network

ANEW have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ARN which outlines areas of collaboration especially in advocacy to African Governments through AMCOW.

African River/Lake Basin Organizations

ANEW was invited to a two day conference on African River/Lake Basin Organizations organised by AMCOW to discuss mutual collaboration and how African Network of Basin Organisations (ANBO) will relate to AMCOW and engage civil society. A small committee (The Tekateka Commission) was formed to recommend ways to which these three bodies can interact.
