FAN at Bonn Climate Change Talks, June 2009

FAN Communications Manager, Ceridwen Johnson, attended the the 13th session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-Term Cooperative Action (AWG LCA) at the Climate Change Talks in Bonn held from 1-12 June 2009.

The Global Public Policy Network on Water Management (GPPN) organised two sessions aimed at raising awareness of water as it relates to climate change adaptation. Ceridwen Johnson gave  presentations at both sessions on behalf of FANSA on the perspective of Southern civil society on Water and Climate Change Adaptation.

The presentation outlined

  • The challenges facing poor communities
  • Their vulnerability to climate change and lack of knowledge and understanding of the issues
  • Some of the existing local level water-related adaptation techniques
  • FANSA’s plans to develop a better understanding of the impacts of climate change
  • Some key priority areas to consider,  including broader stakeholder engagement, enhanced sharing of best practice, greater collaboration in data collection and access to information and addressing water conflicts.

Next Steps

There are a series of meetings and negotiations leading up to the Conference of Parties (COP-15) session to be held in Copenhagen 7-18 December.

This includes another meeting in Bonn in August, 7th session of the AWG-LCA in Bangkok, Thailand 28 Sept – 9 October, and the resumed AWG-LCA in Barcelona, Spain 2-6 November.

GPPN plan to organize an informal meeting at the forthcoming session in Bonn in August, to promote further discussion. They are also in the initial stages of planning a ‘Water Day’ either in Bangkok or in Barcelona. FAN could be involved by presenting work at the Water Day.

FANSA have been asked to nominate a representative to speak in GPPN’s seminar at Stockholm Water Week entitled Building Momentum Towards COP15: A Call to Action on Adaptation

FAN is also considering the possibility of co-hosting a side event at COP-15 to showcase key projects that could be scaled up and to give the opportunity to some members to engage in the process and lobby their delegations to raise the profile of water during the negotiations and push for a positive role for the water community in the follow up of COP15.
