At the first National Sanitation Workshop in Sudan held on 28 and 29 July 2009, six Sudanese Ministers responsible for sanitation have endorsed a declaration on water sewage discharge.
They recognize that approximately 61% of the population of Sudan currently do not have access to safe sanitation and that sanitation and hygiene related diseases are a major cause of death, illness and poverty in Sudan.
