A Citizen Water Front is born in Honduras
Launched on World Water Day, the Citizen Water Front movement is an initiative which brings together various social organizations, communities, private enterprises, national government agencies and the municipality and whose purpose is to find more effective solutions for water supply problems of Tegucigalpa. Drinking water in Santa Clara El Salvador
In March, construction began on the water supply and sanitation system in Santa Clara, San Rafael Oriente, San Miguel, to deliver the vital liquid to 325 families, benefiting 1,950 inhabitants. May 2010
FANCA Nicaragua monitoring Water Boards Bill
FANCA has been monitoring the approval of a law that will recognize the Water Boards of Nicaragua as legal entities, which now operate as community organizations. This is of great importance to the country, particularly for the rural sector in Nicaragua, and will help the improvement and sustainability of water services. May 2010
National Meeting in FANCA Guatemala
The National meeting of FANCA was held in Salama, with the participation of various committees of AURSA as well as drinking water committees of Salama and St. Jerome as well as the Mayor of Salama who spoke about water issues including advances in drinking water management, fundraising strategies and regional water legislation. Community Managed Water Supply and Sanitation Administration manual
The Community Managed Water Supply and Sanitation Administration Manual is one of the Governance and Transparency Fund (GTF) outputs and will be distributed to various water committees in the department of Baja Verapaz. It has already been distributed widely through the network – at the First Central American Community Management Water Fair in Costa Rica organized by FANCA, at FANCA’s national meeting with local water committees and to all members of FUNDEMABV, Pro Water Association Town and AURSA of St. Jerome. Vanessa Dubois appointed new President of the Federation for the Conservation of Nature

First ever Central American fair on community water management
The first Central American fair on community water management Nuestra Agua took place from 19 to 24 March 2010 in the CENAC center in San Jose, Costa Rica. FAN members from FAN South Asia, ANEW, FAN-Mex and FANAS attended to learn from each other and share experiences region to region.

GTF project progress in Honduras

Regional Congress of Water Management for Life, Guatemala
In October, the first Regional Congress of Water Management for Life took place in Quetzaltenango to debate water management issues including how to strengthen capacities and processes for integrated water resource management in the western region. November 2009
Human right to water eliminated by de facto Government in the new water resources law, Honduras
The de facto government of Honduras has removed some fundamental principles from the new law on water resources approved in September – taking out both water as a human right and citizen participation in decision making on water resource management. This is a huge blow to FANCA and other civil society organisations who worked hard for these to be included. November 2009
GEMAS active in discussions on water resources, Panama
Throughout October and September, FANCA member the Group for Education and Sustainable Environmental Management (GEMAS) was a key participant in important discussions on water resources in Panama, attending the first national workshop on Early Flood Warning as well as the second national workshop on creating a National Plan for Integrated Water Resources Management. Water Forum calls for equal access to water in Managua, Nicaragua
Following the realisation that Nicaragua has enough water to serve the country’s population but that the challenge lies in providing equitable access and good water quality, Denis Meléndez from FANCA member the Coalition of Organizations for the Right to Water, has recommended that the network continues to lobby the National Assembly to pass the bill of the Committees of Water Supply and Sanitation (CAPS ). Exchange of experiences between Central American water board communities in El Salvador
Organizations from Nicaragua, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Panama took part in an event that included capacity building on community water management in Central America. The event also served as a great opportunity for organizations to exchange their experiences. November 2009
Communal National Water Meeting, Costa Rica
On 21 September, a national meeting was held on Communal Water Supply in San Jose with the aim of reaching a consensus and establishing a national strategy for communal water supply.
