Strengthening the water environment in Ecatepec

Ecatepec project

The municipality of Ecatepec in Mexico City suffers from a poor provision of basic services, particularly in water, and people often suffer from flooding problems and water pollution caused by the overflowing of rivers into the water system. To address this vulnerability and marginalization, FAN MEX undertook a diagnosis of social relations to identify opportunities to strengthen the water environment in five colonies belonging to three regional areas of the municipality of Ecatepec.

The results of the project were developed by SARAR-transformation, together with UN-HABITAT and the Municipality of Ecatepec of Morelos. The initiative consists of two projects – participatory culture and promotion of sustainable water management; and ecological sanitation.

The project included the installation of rainwater harvesting methods and sustainable sanitation in local schools in July. The project was carried out using the SARAR  methodology which integrates human values with water, sanitation and hygiene in the classroom.
