FANSA member to input into key Millennium Development Goal review

Lajana Manandhar, FANSA steering committee member and Country Convenor of FAN Nepal, has secured the opportunity to input into the UN's review of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Millennium Development Goal Summit, 20-22 September 2010

The international targets, which aim to halve world poverty by 2015, were agreed upon by all 189 United Nations member states at the UN Millennium Summit in 2000. On 20-22 September 2010, the General Assembly will hold a Millennium Development Goal Summit in order to build on learning from the past 10 years and accelerate progress on achieving the goals.

Consultation on the Millennium Development Goals, 14-15 June 2010

The consultation will take place in the run up to the summit on 14-15 June in New York and give civil society (as well as the private sector) a chance to comment on the progress of the MDGs. The outcomes of this consultation will input into preparations for the summit and be issued as an assembly document.

A great opportunity and achievement for the network

Thanks to support from the network, Lajana managed to secure this excellent opportunity for FAN members to feed into the consultation and have a chance to input into the MDG review. Lajana, who has been been selected to participate in a session on Sustaining development and withstanding crises, said:

"This is indeed a wonderful news for me, for Lumanti, for FANSA and for all the partners with whom we work. Thanks to all who provided support. I did not think that I would be selected. I had to fill out the application form in such a short period and I knew that the competition was going to be tough."
