UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme)
UNEP, established in 1972 is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya and has regional and outpost offices in eleven other cities around the world. It works to encourage sustainable development through sound environmental practices.
UNEP's present priorities include:
- Environmental information, assessment and research, including environmental emergency response capacity and strengthening of early warning and assessment functions,
- Enhanced coordination of environmental conventions and development and development of policy instruments;
- Fresh water
- Technology transfer and industry
- Support to Africa
UNEP is primarily funded through the UN with some additional funding through its Environment Fund (voluntary), Trust Funds (extra-budgetary resources that are separate accounts for complementary or supplementary programmes) and Counter-part Contributions.
