International Conferences

FAN targets policy processes most likely to have a significant impact on achieving the IDTs on water.

Since 2000, FAN has participated in the following international meetings:

Large International Water Meetings: Time for a Reappraisal

There has been a dramatic increase in the number, scope, and scale of international water meetings in recent years. While these meetings have contributed to building a global consensus on water-related policies, the authors now have significant doubts about the added value of additional global conferences unless they are carefully designed, limited in scope, and focused in effort. The authors suggest that future global water conferences should address only the problems and solutions that really need global consensus, while smaller regional or sectoral meetings should be used to achieve practical progress more readily and more economically. Ministerial meetings should be organized by the United Nations or national governments, not as parts of general global water conferences.

by Peter H. Gleick, Member IWRA, Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment, and Security, California, USA, and Jon Lane, Consultant, Malawi (2005)

How to Survive at International Conferences

Plan your objectives well in advance - either specific or general (remember to be realistic)

Prepare your activities thoroughly - know the programme, read all of the material and build your activities around the sessions

Take an empty suitcase - for materials

Take a telephone - if you have a cell phone, try to get local sim card in advance and publicise your number in before the conference

Volunteer for tasks - it's appreciated if people get involved in reporting, facilitating etc

Make contributions early in session - naming your organisation and FAN so people in the audience know who you are and will recognise you and your organisation at a later date

Introduce yourself to people - bring twice the number of business cards that you plan to

Follow up contacts afterwards - send an email or note saying 'nice to meet you/thanks for the info/lets keep in touch'

Expect to be exhausted

Don't panic - RELAX others feel the same!
