Implementing Principle 10 of Rio Declaration - FANCA



Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development refers to the rights of access to information, participation and justice in environmental matters. Recently was held a workshop on best practices for its implementation, so that they can be replicated in all the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.


In this event, Vanessa Dubois representing the Freshwater Action Network Central America –FANCA- described the experience of the networkpromoting mechanisms for transparency, accountability and information, which is one of the 3 components of principle 10.

Meanwhile Jorge Mora Portuguez representing ARA  ARCA  made ​​apresentation about the experience on advocacy and participation  regarding the environmental agenda developed from ARA.

Citizen Participation, Information and Access to Environmental Justice are the three components of Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration.


The event was held on September 9 and was organized by ECLAC, Ministry of Environment and Energy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica, and was broadcasted live on the internet throughout Latin America and the world. It was held parallel to the Seventh Meeting of the Working Groups established in the Plan of Action of the Rio Declaration, a process that began in Rio + 20 and seeks to move forward towards the creation of a regional legal instrument on right to access to environmental issues for Latin America and the Caribbean.
